Department of Political Science

Political Science Department started its work in the year 2012 the establishment year of the college. Political Science is a part of UG course in Arts. Various papers as per the prescribed syllabus of the Kashmir University are taught. Initially, the department was allotted one faculty member namely Prof. Mehbooba Bano but due to the tremendously increasing roll of the students under CBCS the staff strength was raised to two. Besides the permanent staff, the temporary staff on a contractual basis are also engaged as per the requirement. Over the last eight years the college has flourished and the department has progressed vigorously. Under CBCS various core, skill and generic courses as per the prescribed syllabus of the University are taught. Besides, the above, students are made aware about the current political affairs around the globe.

Teaching Techniques

Besides the prescribed syllabus/routine classwork in the departments, the following teaching methods are adopted to enhance the academic excellence of the students:

  1. Class tests
  2. Internal assignments
  3. Group discussions

For the above teaching activities students are guided for preparing the internal assignments. Apart from the above activities Departmental seminars are conducted from time to time on the present political scenario around the world.

Departmental Meetings

The department conducts periodic meetings to review the performance of the department and discuss various issues regarding the completion of Syllabus, management of Timetable, availability of books in the college library and other allied matters.

Departmental Library

The department is not having a separate library but there is a large number of reference and text books written by different foreign and Indian authors available in the college library. A good number of books is added periodically to enrich the stock of the library.

Strength

  • Stable administration since the inception of the college.
  • Classes are conducted properly. Lectures are conducted on contemporary issues.
  • Qualified, motivated and competent faculty with a blend of high experience and young and energetic dynamism.
  • Participation in debates, seminars, workshops, conferences, group discussions, symposiums.
  • Effective teaching learning process. Well-equipped library with sufficient number of books.
  • Supporting students through tutorial remedial classes.

Weakness

  • The majority of students come from poor socio economic background and they may not have good academic background.
  • Students from rural background with poor language skills.
  • Poor transport facilities for most of the students.
  • Lack of separate building for department.

Opportunities

  •  More scope to use new techniques in teaching learning programmes.
  • To provide counseling for students to become more employable.
  • Skill development Programme for students.
  • Wide scope for the students to build up their carrier.

Challenges

  • Backwardness and poverty of the students.
  • In recent times the number of students opting B.A. Course is declining due to more professional colleges and encouragement to the technical courses.
  • To enhance the percentage of attendance of the students in classes.
  • The pressing need to incorporate Political Anthropology into our core Political Science modules.
  • Encouraging students for competitive examinations and higher studies.

Future plans

The Department of Political Science suggests to start a Bachelor’s Course in Human Rights that comes under the purview of Political Science Department. Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights is three year Under Graduate Degree Course that deals with the study of the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world. The department of Political Science also plans to have a subject tour yearly for the students to make them aware about the history development of Political Science in India regarding the different institutions coming under the purview of Political Science.
