Department of Islamic Studies

An Introduction

The department of Islamic Studies, Government Degree College, Pampore was established in the year 12th of June 2013 vide Govt. order no 212/ HE of 2013 dated 12/06/2013. After seven years of its establishment, the department has gained strong identification on account of valuable teaching learning programmes. More and more students are now opting for Islamic Studies as the subject has helped them to understand their religion and society better and succeed in various competitive exams. Islamic Studies Specialism, propositions students an interdisciplinary and global examination of the Islam and Muslim Societies and cultures with human values. Focus is on the knowledge of Islam in all its internal involvedness, the history of humanity from the inception to the 21st century with postmodern trends of Islamic ideology, Islamic Social Science contexts and the diversity of human experience as seen in literature and the arts originating in Societies affected by Islamic civilizations throughout. Students explore the global magnitude of Islam and the growth its Diasporas’ by taking courses on geographical regions such as the Middle East, South Asia, Eurasia, Africa, Western Europe and United states from disciplines such as anthropology, art and art history, comparative literature, history, political science, international relations and comparative religions.

Aims and Objectives of the Discipline

  1. The diverse aim of the subject is to create a platform for the students of Islamic Studies with an internationalized exposure to the past and present of Islam in diverse social, political and cultural settings.
  2. It is to touch the Islamic economic system with most recent trends like Islamic finance and banking, the future prospectus as an alternative for financial crises.
  3. It is to train the students with intellectual trends of education and absorption of epistemological bias.

Activities

CURRCULAR ACTIVITIES: The main curricular activity is carried through virtual class room and Google Class Room activities, however many a times the students are made to visit religious places to get acquainted with the social aspect of religion, great religious personalities and historical perspectives, knowledge in order to understand the human society in Islamic perspective.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: The department organises symposia, seminars and debates on various contemporary issues to promote an interest in the study of Islamic Teachings, Human rights, Ethics, Mulsim Philosphy, Islamic History, Islamic Religious Sciences  and other social paradigms as will lead to improvement in the human nature.

OBJECTIVES: The department of Islamic Studies at GDC Pampore is committed to the programme of teaching and learning that is firmly rooted to the discipline. Various courses offered in the discipline are mainly theoretically driven and empirically grounded and spiritually enhanced. The department is also committed to encourage inter disciplinary and inter religious approach that leads to the better understanding, tolerance, brotherhood, integrity and cooperation of human society on the whole.
