One Day Seminar on Breast Cancer Awareness

The Women’s Development Cell (WDC) and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college under the able guidance of the worthy Principal Prof. Saffiya Khalil organized a One Day Seminar on Breast Cancer: A Public Health Concern on 27th November, 2024 in the Conference Hall in 8 Classroom block.
The programme aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer, its prevention, detection, and treatment. The awareness programme on breast cancer informed the audience about the significance of early detection, lifestyle changes, and the importance of self-examination and screening in the fight against breast cancer. The event also aimed to empower students with the knowledge to make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being.
The seminar began with a welcome address by Prof. Samina Yesvi, Coordinator, Womens’s Development Cell who welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of awareness about breast cancer. The principal of the college Prof. Saffiya Khalil presented the keynote address. In her speech, she highlighted how the seminar was a timely initiative, given the growing concerns about breast cancer in the country and worldwide.
The resource person for the first session was Dr. Manzoor Ahmed Mir, Head Department of Bio resources, University of Kashmir. He deliberated on the topic, “Breast Cancer Awareness: The way forward to tackle the alarming rate of Breast Cancer rise in Kashmir Valley.” Dr. Mir presented an in-depth overview of breast cancer, explaining the biological aspects of the disease, the various stages, and how it affects the body. The session focused on identifying risk factors such as age, genetics, family history, lifestyle, and environmental factors. The speaker also highlighted emerging research on the prevention and management of breast cancer, emphasizing the need for early intervention.
The resource person for the second session was Dr. Azhar Mushtaq, Breast Surgeon, SKIMS. He deliberated on the topic, “Women at Higher Risk of Breast Cancer and the concept of risk based breast screening.” Dr Mushtaq discussed the current treatment options for breast cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapies. The speaker also highlighted new advancements in treatment, such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies, which have shown promising results in recent years.
The resource person of the last session was Dr. Zainab Nabi, Senior Resident, SKIMS. She delivered a talk on the topic, “Breast Self- Examination – Techniques, Importance and Advantages in early detection of Breast Cancer.” Dr. Nabi demonstrated the significance of regular self-examination and how women should check for changes in their breasts such as lumps, changes in size or shape, or skin dimpling. A live demonstration of self-breast examination was conducted, allowing the participants to learn the correct technique. This session was highly interactive, and many participants actively engaged in the demonstration.
The event concluded with an open Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to ask the experts questions about breast cancer. The experts addressed a wide range of queries concerning breast cancer prevention, treatment, and psychological aspects.
The seminar was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shabir Hussain Lone, Coordinator IQAC. The programme was moderated by Prof. Redwan Nayeem. Dr Shaifta Ayoub acted as rapporteur for the whole session.
