An Introduction

The Urdu is a major language of this sub-continent, with an international outlook. In the Jammu &
Kashmir Union Territory, this is an official language and a lingua-frinca of three regions of Ladakh,
Jammu & Kashmir. The people of the UT love this language and younger students in schools colleges and
universities like to communicate in this language.
The Department of Urdu strives to create personalities with international outlook, by promoting values
of tolerance mutual co-existence, humanism and brotherhood. The language has a rich heritage of prose
and poetry which depicts eastern psyche and creates genuine conscience with regard to human values.
